|Children enticed into van by man - Wigan
Police in Wigan are re-iterating the message that children should avoid strangers after a man tried to entice two youngsters into his van.
On Monday 1 October 2007 an 11-year-old boy was walking along Mesnes Road in Swinley when a man driving a white van approached him. It was about 4.00pm.
The man beckoned the boy to get into the vehicle. He refused, and the man drove away.
Yesterday, on Tuesday 2 October, an 11-year-old girl was outside a house on Miles Lane in Appley Bridge at about 7.30pm when a similar incident happened.
A man in a white van drove up and spoke to her, inviting her to go with him. Again, the girl refused, and the man drove away.
In both incidents the man described was white and had dark hair.
Detective Inspector Steve Crimmins from Wigan CID said: “Its reassuring to see that both these children acted very sensibly and refused to entertain this man.
“We really don’t feel there is any need to panic, but wanted to make sure parents and teachers in Wigan were aware of these incidents, and continued to encourage all children to be wary of strangers, and never to accept lifts with anyone they don’t know.”
Anyone with any information about these incidents, or who has concerns about this man, is asked to contact police on 0161 856 7248 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
