Armed robbery at newsagents - Whelley

Police in Wigan are appealing for witnesses after an armed robbery at a newsagents in Whelley on Tuesday 28 November 2006.

Officers were called to the Martinís newsagents on the B5238 in Whelley at 7.15am following reports that three men armed with knives had threatened staff and customers in the shop before stealing a quantity of cash and cigarettes.

One of the offenders forced staff to open the till and stole the cash inside. The other men filled a duvet cover with the cigarettes. They all drove away from the scene in a car that had been parked outside.

One of the men responsible for the robbery is believed to have been white, aged around 24-years-old about 5ft 9in tall and of slim build. He was wearing a balaclava but had blue eyes and spoke in a local Wigan accent. He was carrying a 12in knife with a patterned handle.

Anyone with any information about this robbery or who may have seen anybody acting suspiciously in the area at the time is asked to contact police on 0161 856 5307 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
