The Essential Guide to Children's Activities Gets Pop Star Treatment
Thursday 12th October, 2006

A free guide to all children's activities taking place across Wigan Borough is getting a special delivery this week. 'What's On For Kids', which is designed to encourage young children and their families to get physically, mentally and creatively active across the borough, is being re-launched with the help of pop star Lauren Waterworth.

Lauren will be on hand to make a special delivery of the re-vamped guide (formerly known as Kids Festival) to her old school Castle Hill, St Philips C.E. Primary School in Hindley.

What's On For Kids is produced by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) and lists a whole range of fun activities for children to do during their holidays. The guide is written in a fun style that appeals to children and lists activities ranging from art to play. It is delivered three times a year to all 29,500 primary school age children via their schools.

Pete Gascoigne, WLCT's Executive Director for Policy and Regeneration, said, "We are very pleased that What's On For Kids has reached its fourteenth edition. The guide promotes all kinds of fun, inspiring and healthy activities that Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and our partners organise during school holiday periods. It is becoming increasingly popular with children and parents and we want to keep building on the success story and get more and more young children active."

Lauren Waterworth is overjoyed to be returning to her old school to personally deliver the latest edition, she said, "I love coming back to my old school - it has a really family atmosphere. I am delighted to have been asked here to deliver the latest edition of What's On For Kids. It is a great guide, packed with lots of things for children. There is everything in there from sports activities to special events like Halloween. There is no excuse for them to say that they're bored with so many different things listed - what's more it's free!"

Jill Brennan, Head Teacher at Castle Hill, said, "It's great to have Lauren back at the school. She is a wonderful girl from a great family with her feet firmly on the ground and she is the ideal to promote the guide. What's On For Kids is a very important tool for all parents and gives them an opportunity to get their children involved in lots of fun activities that have both educational and health benefits. We are delighted to support it."

For further information about 'What's On For Kids' contact Jennifer Cockram on 01942 486935. The guide is delivered to all 120 primary schools in the Wigan Borough and is available at all WLCT-managed libraries and sports centres. What's On For Kids is also available online at www.wlct.org.
