More free short-stay parking introduced in Wigan
Tuesday 14th November, 2017

Extra free short-stay parking has been introduced in Wigan to help people picking up parcels in the run up to Christmas.

The short-stay spaces have been introduced at Mona Street car park close to the Royal Mail delivery office in Hallgate.

On-street parking has been limited in the area to accommodate some temporary bus stops in the town centre, which are in place while the new Wigan Bus Station is being built.

The relocated stops mean that while the bus station is closed passengers can still catch their service nearby.

With the delivery office becoming increasingly busy in the run-up to Christmas, Wigan Council has now put in place four short-stay spaces to help cope with demand.

Free parking is available in the places for up to 20 minutes from 8am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday, no return in two hours.

There are double yellow lines directly outside the delivery office on Hallgate while the temporary bus stops are in place, with no waiting at any time. Motorists are not allowed to park on the temporary bus stops as this will cause congestion and road safety hazards. As a result they risk receiving a penalty charge notice.

Emma Barton, assistant director for economy and regeneration, said: “We hope the extra short stay spaces at Mona Street car park will be useful to people when they just need a few minutes to collect parcels from the delivery office.

“We thank people for their patience during the bus station regeneration which once completed will create a fantastic new facility for the town.”

Delivered by Transport For Greater Manchester, £15.7m funding for the Wigan Bus Station development is being supported by central government through the Greater Manchester Local Growth Deal Programme. It will create a new, modern facility for Wigan. It is expected to be open by the end of 2018.
