Ashton Leisure Centre’s £2.8M transformation hit a landmark moment this week with an official “topping out” ceremony.
Traditionally held when the last beam is put in place, it marks the completion of the structural phase of work by Warden Construction.
Wigan Council's lead member for leisure, Cllr Jim Moodie said: "Work is progressing very well and we are grateful to Warden Construction and Inspiring healthy lifestyles for managing the project so well.
"Ashton Leisure Centre is an exciting project for residents and the improvements will continue to benefit the health of local people in-line with the Deal for Health and Wellness."
Once complete the leisure centre will boast a brand new 80-station gym complete with the latest Technogym equipment, new group exercise studio and indoor cycling studio. But that’s not all! There will also be brand new sauna and steam rooms and additional changing facilities.
A state-of-the-art synthetic pitch and multi-use games area will also be installed to enable group and community bookings at the site which is managed by Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of Wigan Council.
This is the fourth leisure centre to receive an upgrade as part of the Deal for Health and Wellness which has seen Wigan Council invest £6million to support residents to lead long and healthy lives.
Gareth Cross, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Inspiring healthy lifestyles, said: “This is already shaping up to be another top class leisure centre.
“By modernising Ashton Leisure Centre, introducing new and exciting fitness classes, fitting the latest gym equipment and expanding the range of opportunities available we can inspire many more people to get active and healthy as well as providing a better product for our existing customers."
The refurbishment to the leisure centre is scheduled to be fully completed by spring 2018.
