Family Learning Week: Looking to the Past to Encourage Understanding
Thursday 28th September, 2006

Wigan Pier, the History Shop and three of the borough's libraries are all joining forces to deliver a host of exciting free activities as part of Family Learning Week from 7th to 15th October. The main theme of this year's activities is 'understanding others'.

Family Learning Week is a national awareness initiative organised by the Campaign for Learning. The campaign aims to strengthen communities and to create more opportunities for families to learn together by offering special family learning events in October each year.

Carole Tyldesley, Head of Heritage Services, said, "Family Learning Week is all about encouraging families to learn together in a fun environment. Research shows that parents and carers are the most important factor in helping children to do well at school and in further education. Working with libraries we have put together a fun package of events for the week that we hope will encourage more and more people to share the experience of learning together."

The main theme of this year's activities in Wigan Borough is 'understanding others'. On Saturday 7th October The History Shop will be opening up its doors to the wild world of Buffalo Bill and the unique history of the Native Americans. This free event involves lots of fun craft activities and is suitable for families with children aged 4 to 11 years old. Contact the History Shop on 01942 828128 for further details.

On Sunday 8th October, Wigan Pier will be delving into a 1940s world full of gas masks, medals, parachutes and pigeon boxes, with the aid of World War 2 enthusiasts Angela and Frank from Pegasus WW2 displays. They will be offering families a chance to try on 1940s uniforms and helmets and even learn a few wartime dance moves! This event is completely free but booking is essential on 01942 323666.

Family Learning Week also extends to Wigan Borough's libraries who will be providing some free after school events. At 3.45pm, on Monday 9th October, Marsh Green Library will host a free family activity session including arts, crafts and reading games all linked to family favourite stories. The sessions will be also take place at Atherton Library (Tuesday 10th) and Ince Library (Thursday 12th) and will be repeated weekly throughout October and early November. Families should contact their local library for further details.
