Wigan Life Centre set for exciting leisure upgrade
Tuesday 16th May, 2017

Exciting improvements are set to be introduced to the gym and studio at Wigan Life Centre thanks to a £350,000 investment into the facility.

The work, which is set to begin in early June, will see gym goers benefit from the latest Technogym equipment and technology, as well as virtual classes in the existing group studio, and a brand new studio will be created for activities such as yoga and pilates.

Wigan Life Centre will become one of the first centres in the UK to use Technogym’s Skillrow, developed in collaboration with Olympic athletes to provide a realistic feeling of being on water. Skillmill and Excite Climb will also be used for the first time in Inspiring healthy lifestyles’ centres in the borough, giving members the ideal equipment to train like sports professionals.

The mywellness cloud will also be introduced, allowing members to build their own programmes, take part in gym challenges and track their training inside and outside of the gym, linking with up to 10 apps to provide a full fitness experience.

The improvements see investment into leisure facilities in Wigan Borough to £10million as part of the Deal for Health and Wellness.

Donna Hall, chief executive for Wigan Council said:

“This is a fantastic investment into an important leisure facility for residents and businesses in the heart of Wigan town centre. The upgrades are part of Wigan Council’s commitment to supporting local people to lead long and healthy lives, therefore improving life expectancy, of which Wigan Borough’s is the fastest improving in the North West. The modernisation of the gym and studios will give people a wider range of opportunities to continue to do so.”

Inspiring healthy lifestyles are leading on the refurbishment, with managing director, Peter Burt adding:

“Upgrading the fitness offer at Wigan Life Centre is a very exciting process. It will see us introduce some exclusive equipment for our members, only used by a minority of other leisure providers in the UK so far. We will also be expanding into a second studio, purpose built to provide low impact group classes.”

The first phase of the refurbishment will begin on Monday 5th June, re-fitting and re-decorating the existing and new studio, with a view to completion on Friday 16th June. During this time, the studio will be closed until 5.00pm each day, but fast classes will be introduced in the gym and a revised class timetable will be available from 5.00pm.

Gym works will begin on Friday 16th June and are set to be completed by Friday 3rd July. During this time, a temporary closure of the gym will be in place but there will be additional classes during this period, while members can access all other Inspiring healthy lifestyles centres as part of their membership. Swimming will not be affected.
