Sporting talent celebrated at awards ceremony
Believe Sports Awards Group

TALENTED local sports stars and the volunteers who support them were celebrated at the 14th annual Believe Sports Awards on Friday (12 September).

Nearly 400 people gathered at the DW Stadium for the special event, which saw 97 nominations made over nine categories.

Among this year’s winners were the Leigh St Mary's U18s Water Polo Team, which was awarded Team of the Year after winning the English Schools U18s Girls Water Polo Championships for the third year running; and Gregg Warburton, who represents Great Britain at Wheelchair Basketball and was named Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year.

Andy Wiggans, Chair of Trustees at leisure and culture provider WLCT, which organises the event, said: “The awards recognise those outstanding individuals and teams who strive to be the best in their sport, as well as those volunteers who go the extra mile to support talent in the borough. Well done to everyone who was nominated this year and to all those who work hard to develop sport across Wigan and Leigh.”

Highlights of the event, sponsored by Wigan Council, included guest speaker Derek Derenalagi, British Paralympic discus thrower and former soldier.

Cllr Paul Kenny, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “Our borough has a rich sporting history and this inspiring event gives us the chance to celebrate some of our homegrown talent including individuals set to become the next stars of the future. We should all be very proud of tonight’s award winners.”
