Friday 5th September, 2014

It happened between 2pm and 3.30pm on Monday 1 September 2014, on Holmes House Avenue in Winstanley where it was reported a man had attempted to abduct an eight-year-old girl.

The girl was riding along on her scooter with her friend who was just ahead, she passed the electrical substation when the man came out from behind the substation and grabbed her ponytail and put his hand over her mouth.

He then let go of her ponytail and grabbed hold of her arm, the girl used her elbow to hit him in the stomach and screamed to her friend who ran back and threatened to phone the police. The offender then ran back into the wooded area.

A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempt child abduction and remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Baldham from Wigan division, said: “We have had a great response from the community and I would like to thank them for their help and support over the last few days.

“An investigation was launched and we had a team of officers working to identify the man responsible and support the girl and her family.

“We circulated the man's description around the force and today, an off duty police officer recognised the man from his description and contacted the police. A 46-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempt child abduction.

“We understand that reports such as this cause great concern and we would like to reassure the community that following a thorough investigation a man has been arrested and remains in police custody.

“If you have any concerns in relation to this incident please do not hesitate to contact us.”
