Wigan Borough backs Armed Forces Day
Wednesday 25th June, 2014

Wigan Borough will show its support for the UK’s military personnel as events are held this Saturday (28 June) to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

A military parade, featuring serving service men and women and veterans, and a flyover by a Royal Air Force Hurricane will be among the highlights as the borough joins in the national celebration of our armed forces.

Events will be focused in Wigan town centre with various military vehicles on display throughout Saturday and a short service at the cenotaph. It’s the third year events have been held as part of Armed Forces Day, which aims to raise awareness of the contribution made by those who serve - and have served - in our armed forces.

Councillor Paul Kenny, Wigan Council cabinet member, said: “This Saturday will be a very special day in Wigan town centre as we celebrate our armed forces. Here in Wigan Borough, we’re proud of our brave men and women who sacrifice so much on our behalf and who help safeguard the peace and prosperity we all enjoy.

“Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude to those who have left service and those still serving, to celebrate the achievements of our forces and to remember the contribution they make to our communities.”
