Paint recycling project is back in town
Friday 11th April, 2014

A SUCCESSFUL scheme in which householders are given the chance to clear their sheds, garages and cupboards of unwanted paint will return to Wigan this month.

The Kick Out The Can initiative will allow people to take surplus paint to their local Crown Decorating Centre in Caroline Street for recycling.

In return, customers will receive a 20 per cent discount voucher to use until July 31, 2014.

Sheds, cupboards and garages across the country are thought to hold around 54 million litres of unused paint - which customers are being encouraged to recycle during the Kick Out The Can campaign.

The paint collected in-store will be re-processed by social enterprise company Nimtech and then donated to community projects through regeneration charity Groundwork.

Leftover plastic and metal paint containers will also be recycled.

Mark Lloyd, Sustainability Manager for Crown Decorating Centres, said: “Last year, Kick Out The Can was a huge success.

“We teamed up with Climate Week to encourage recycling and worked in partnership with Groundwork to ensure the re-processed paint was distributed to some excellent projects such as community gardens, youth centres and social housing apprenticeship schemes.

“Householders showed us that they valued the opportunity to clear out surplus paint while also making a positive contribution to communities across the country simply through the numbers who took part in the scheme - with 5,000 tins being brought back across the Crown Decorating Centres network.

“That is why, this year, we are rewarding customers with a 20 per cent discount voucher - which they can use in-store until July 31 - when they return unwanted paint or woodcare products for recycling.”

Householders will be able to return up to 10 containers of any decorative paint to their nearest Crown Decorating Centre on any single visit between April 18 and May 6.

Paint will need to be in the original container with the lid securely attached and no foreign objects or substances in the cans. Aerosols and rusty cans cannot be accepted.
