Award proves Wigan Careers Service is top notch
Monday 7th April, 2014

Wigan Careers Service coordinated a range of successful activities during National Careers Week recently, while also celebrating receiving official recognition for their delivery of high quality information, advice and guidance (IAG).

The team, led by Wigan Council, has been awarded the Matrix Standard – the mark recommended by the Department of Education as a way for schools and colleges to assess the quality of a careers guidance service. It promotes the delivery of high quality IAG by ensuring organisations review, evaluate and develop their service, and encourage the take up of professionally recognised qualifications and the continuous professional development of their staff.

Wigan Careers Service team leader, Ian Guest, said:

“We’ve had a great few weeks. Receiving the Matrix Standard shows schools and other organisations that we are excellent at what we do, but also that we are continuously looking to improve our service. It means a lot to receive the accreditation as it reviews several important elements, such as our resources, service delivery, continuous quality improvement and leadership and management.

“We’ve also had some superb feedback from the schools we worked with on some great activities during National Careers Week. One of the highlights was the radio advert for our service produced by the groups of schoolchildren who were able to go and work with the professional team at Wish FM. It was a great success and enjoyed by everyone who took part.

“The radio campaign will also be a great opportunity to promote our new careers portal, ‘Resource Companion.’ We want as many young people as possible to have access to quality assured careers information and our website allows us to collect national and local resources that pupils, parents and schools can access at any time.”

Hawkley Hall High School teacher, Claire Knowles, added: “The pupils had a brilliant day and developed lots of new skills they will bring back to Hawkley and share with their peers. I feel they produced an amazing advert with the experienced staff at Wish FM. It was a fantastic opportunity for them.”

National Careers Week is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK and brings together students, local employers and advisers through careers events and activities. National Careers Week is the opportunity for many to focus on careers education, information, advice and guidance and an invaluable insight to the world of work for many people.

The Matrix Standard is maintained and promoted by emqc Ltd on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
