Helen’s got the keys to success
Helen Sung

A RISING American jazz star has been added to the Wigan International Jazz Festival line up.

People buying tickets to see trumpet legend Jon Faddis and the Wigan Jazz Club Reunion Big Band will also have the privilege of listening to award-winning pianist Helen Sung.

The Helen Sung Quartet will kick off the entertainment at Robin Park Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday 12 July at 7.30pm.

Ian Darrington, Festival Director, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured Helen, who is an extremely talented young pianist with a bright future ahead of her. Don’t miss out on the chance to watch her perform!”

Texan Helen graduated from the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and won the Kennedy Center's Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Her album, Anthem For A New Day, is newly released on Concord Records.

The Wigan International Jazz Festival, sponsored by Manchester Airport, takes place from Thursday 10 July to Sunday 13 July.

Other highlights include Jools Holland, performing with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, featuring original Squeeze band member and drummer Gilson Lavis, special guest stars Mel C and Marc Almond, and guest vocalists Ruby Turner and Louise Marshall; and Clare Teal with Her Hollywood Orchestra performing classics to celebrate Doris Day’s 90th birthday.
