Images released of fraud suspect - Wigan
Car fraud suspect

Police have issued the image of a man wanted in connection with a car theft and serious fraud.

On Wednesday 19 February 2014 the man stole a black BMW from the Kilhey Court Hotel and Country Club on Chorley Road, Wigan.

The man forced open a locker in the male changing room in the gym and stole the key before driving away in the car.

The car’s identity was then changed and advertised on Autotrader.

An innocent buyer spotted the vehicle advertised on the Autotrader and after obtaining some detail from the seller, did checks on the vehicle, which came back with no concerns. He phoned the seller and made arrangements to visit the seller’s home address that was provided as Heritage Way Wigan.

On Friday 14 March the buyer met the seller, who produced the vehicle registration document and his driving license, both of which looked legitimate. The buyer also took a photo of the seller’s driving license.

Believing the car to be legitimate, the victim handed over £11,750 in cash. It was later discovered that the car was stolen and the suspect’s driving license was forged.

Detective Constable Kevin Telford from Wigan Division, said:

“We have released the image of the suspect used on the fraudulent driving license. I would urge you to take a close look at the photo, which is very clear and if you recognise this man, please contact us.

“Our enquiries are on-going to establish the identity of the male. The fraud victim did everything he could to check the car was genuine, so we urge the public to be extra vigilant when buying used cars.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
