Bracelet stolen from elderly woman
Stolen bracelet

An 89-year-old woman had a bracelet stolen that had been given to her from her late husband.

Just after 3.15pm on Thursday 13 March 2014, the woman answered a knock at the door to her Balcarres Avenue home in Whelley, Wigan.

A man, claiming to be a salesmen, asked whether she had any gold jewellery that she wanted to sell. She began to show him jewellery before he asked her to show him another piece from the drawer.

It is believed he then took the bracelet from her dressing table before he left.

The man is described as being olive skinned, in his 50s or 60s, had dark hair, around 5ft 5in tall, of average build, was wearing dark jacket and possibly a shirt and tie underneath.

Police Constable Myles Edwards based at Wigan Police Station said: “This is a despicable crime on an elderly and vulnerable member of our society. The fact that a piece of jewellery, that was given to her by her late husband of 60 years, was taken makes it even worse.

“The bracelet has the words ‘To Margaret from Tommy’ on the inside, a leaf motif is on the outside and it is attached to a chain.

“It does not have a lot of monetary value but the understandably, the personal worth is priceless and she is eager to be reunited with her beloved jewellery.

“I would ask anyone who recognises the image of the bracelet or who may have been offered it under suspicious circumstances, to contact police.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
