|Council tax-band scam leads to arrest
A man, believed to be at the centre of a tax scam, has been arrested in Bury.
The arrest followed a number of complaints from local residents who had been approached by a company claiming that they could refund them money as they were in the wrong tax-band.
Officers from Trading Standards North West ‘Scambusters’ team, assisted by colleagues from Trading Standards authorities across the North West and officers from Greater Manchester Police, executed a search warrant at a business premises on January 27 in relation to the scam.
Councillor Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Our officers have stopped many residents from being ripped off by these kinds of companies by advising them to cancel appointments made with the companies and explaining how to check their banding for themselves.”
“Wigan Trading Standards have worked closely with ‘Scambusters’ and gathered intelligence about the activities of these kinds of companies, which they have passed to the team to help them build the case which has resulted in this action.”
Enquiries are continuing into the company concerned. Anyone concerned that they may have fallen victim to this or a similar fraud should contact the Citizen’s Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 04 05 06.
