Wigan Council reveals new mayor
Phyllis Cullen

Wigan Council has revealed its new Mayor and Deputy Mayor for 2014/2015.

The new Mayor will be current Deputy Mayor and ward councillor for Wigan West, Phyllis Cullen. She will be joined by Councillor Susan Loudon, cabinet member for children and young people, as Deputy Mayor.

The Mayor making ceremony will take place on Wednesday 11 June.

Councillor Phyllis Cullen, who has represented Wigan West ward since 2007, said: I feel it both an honour and a privilege to serve and represent the borough of Wigan, I feel very passionate about Wigan West, which covers Gidlow, Springfield Martland Mill and Beech Hill as it is the area I have lived in for almost thirty eight years.

The soon to be Mayor is currently on the Licensing and Regulation Committee, Confident Places Scrutiny Committee, Wigan Access Committee, Friends of Mesnes Park Committee, Local Access Forum, Beech Hill and Sacred Heart Collaborative Leadership Committee, Friends of Beech Hill Tenants and Residents group, Wigan Women's Forum and is a member of Book Cycle and St Andrews Parochial Church Council.

Councillor Cullen went on to say: I find being a councillor is a job that is certainly not mundane or boring, there are new and different challenges to face every day and I know that being the Mayor there will certainly be no time to get bored.

The Mayor, Billy Rotherham, said: I know Councillor Cullen very well and she will be an excellent Mayor for Wigan next year. She is a lovely lady who has a real feel for the community. She has deputised several times for the Mayoress and myself this year and done so in a very dignified manor. She will be a credit to the role and I wish her and Terry every good wish for the next municipal year.

Councillor Loudon said: I am looking forward to taking on the role of supporting our next Mayor and hopefully that will give me a little knowledge of what it will be like to be the Mayor of a fantastic borough in 2015."

Councillor Susan Loudon will step down from cabinet before she takes up her new role.
