Fishy goings on
Thursday 12th December, 2013

Residents are being warned not to buy fish from door-to-door salesmen by Wigan Council’s trading standards team.

The warning comes after several unhappy customers reported feeling pressured into buying large quantities of fish they didn’t want.

The salesman are said to use ‘hard sales tactics’ – agreeing to sell just one piece of fish, before filling the customer's freezer with pre-packed fish and demanding a large amount of money.

Julie Middlehurst, Wigan Council’s trading standards manager, said: “These traders work in teams and target vulnerable older adults.

“I would urge residents not to buy fish from an unknown seller who turns up on the doorstep, even if it seems like a bargain, as they may end up paying hundreds of pounds.”

Councillor Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for communities, said: “We are working with police to investigate these traders and we would ask people to be on their guard and report any sightings to us by calling the Citizens Advice consumer service on 08454 04 05 06.”
