WLCT Get Active team who supported the races

WLCT Get Active team are calling on women from Wigan who took part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events Wigan to make every step count – by returning their sponsorship money as soon as possible.

Emma Martin from the WLCT Get Active team led the aerobic warm up at Race for Life Wigan 2013 and now she is encouraging the 1500 women who entered the event at Haigh Hall on Sunday 12th May to make one last dash for cash.

Many don’t realise that their entry fee only covers the cost of the event.  It’s the sponsorship money that really makes a difference. Cancer Research UK relies on money raised through Race for Life to fund life-saving research, much of which happens very close to us in the North West.

Every hour, around four people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West*. But the good news is that research, funded through Race for Life Wigan is helping men, women and children to survive the disease.

Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

The women want to highlight how important money raised through Race for Life is to the work of doctors, nurses and scientists funded by Cancer Research UK, including those at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute. They are dedicated to beating cancer by understanding its causes and investigating how best to diagnose, treat and prevent the disease.

Emma Martin said: “Now the big day is over, please help Cancer Research UK by taking one vital last step by returning the money you’ve raised so it can fund vital research to help more men, women and children survive cancer. All participants who took part at Wigan Race for Life 2013 did an amazing job. Let’s get all the sponsor money in and aim to beat last year’s total.”

Race for Life is an amazing women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year for life-saving research to beat 200 types of cancer – helping men, women and children across the region.

Liz Booth, Race for Life event manager for the North West, said: “Race for Life in Wigan was a fantastic event. We want to say a heart-felt thanks to everyone who took part or supported our participants, as well as the wonderful volunteers who helped make it happen. Already the generosity of local people has raised an amazing £72,000 from the Wigan event, but we would love to be able to beat our target of £80,000.

“Last year, a third of the women who took part didn’t return any sponsorship money. Without this money, Race for Life can’t fund all the research that’s needed to help save more lives. As the number of people diagnosed with cancer in the North West continues to rise, and the economy tightens, we need the support of local people now more than ever.

“So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. It can be paid in online, by phone or by cheque.”
