Rugby league exhibition launches at museum
Tuesday 1st October, 2013

SPORT and history lovers can enjoy a new exhibition at the Museum of Wigan Life which celebrates the history of rugby league in the borough.

Tries, Teams and Trophies Rugby League in Wigan Borough will be open from Saturday 5 October 2013 to Saturday 11 January 2014.

Visitors to the exhibition, taking place in the run up to the Rugby League World Cup 2013, can discover original memorabilia from Jim Slevin and other giants of the game.

Lynda Jackson, Community History Manager at the museum, said: Its already been a successful year for rugby league in the borough, with our local teams doing us proud and in November the Rugby League World Cup will put Wigan and Leigh on the international stage.

Im delighted that weve been able to put this exhibition together to bring to life the history of the sport for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who lent memorabilia and other items for display!

People coming along to the museum on Saturday 5 October at 1pm can also join playwright Mick Martin to discuss the people and passion behind the foundation of Rugby League in 1895. Actors will play selected scenes from his nationally acclaimed Broken Time, described by the Guardian newspaper as a 'cracking play about rugby, class, money and sportsmanship...Nothing short of civil war on studs'. To book a place, please contact the museum on 01942 828128 or email heritage@wlct.org.
