It happened at about 10.45pm on Saturday 28 September 2013 when the 24-year-old was on Kingsley Avenue in Worsley Mesnes.

He was approached by a man who attacked him with a weapon, described by witnesses as a large kitchen knife.

He was taken to hospital for treatment for wounds to his head and body. His injuries are not life threatening.

Today, Monday 30 September 2013, a 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Derek Thomas based at Wigan Police Station said: “The victim suffered serious injuries as a result of being stabbed in what was a very serious and violent attack. Thankfully his injuries are not life threatening.

“We have been working hard to understand the motive for this attack and to identify the offender and as a result of our enquiries we have this morning arrested a man in connection with this incident.

“While we are making good progress we would continue to encourage anyone who saw anything or knows what happened and why to call us.”
