|Sunbed shop owner fined
The owner of a sunbed shop in Wigan has been fined hundreds of pounds after allowing an underage boy to use a sunbed.
Gillian Catterall, owner of Tan Hair Rife on Ormskirk Road, Wigan was caught red handed when a Wigan Trading Standards officer called at the shop to discuss a complaint in March. While there, the officer witnessed a 14 year old boy leaving one of the tanning rooms.
In the first prosecution of its kind in Wigan, Ms Catterall admitted breaking The Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010, which restricts the use of sunbeds to persons aged 18 years and older.
Appearing before Wigan Magistrates Court last month, Ms Catterall told the court that she had only owned the business from February this year and the boy had informed her that he was 18 years old. Ms Catterall was found guilty and fined a total of £630.00 as a result.
Councillor Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for communities at Wigan Council said: “In recent years, the accessibility of sunbed shops has increased as has the number of those diagnosed with skin cancer. The link is clear, hence why The World Health Organisation introduced the age restriction.
“Despite receiving comprehensive advice from our trading standards team just weeks before the incident, Ms Catterall chose to ignore the law and breached the regulations.
“Sunbed businesses in Wigan Borough have a legal and moral responsibility to uphold this law, and those caught breaking it and allowing underage users to access a sunbed will be caught and prosecuted.”
