|Hefty fine for shopkeeper
Illegal tobacco found at Nallys Convenience store.
A Hindley shopkeeper found guilty of selling illegal cigarettes has been fined over £1400.00.
The owner of Nallys Convenience store on Market Street, Hindley, Mr Walley Rashid, was caught out when Wigan Council's trading standards team, armed with sniffer dogs, raided his shop earlier this year.
In total, officers found 5500 cigarettes and 4.7 Kg of tobacco stashed behind the counter. Most packs were duty free but some of the packs were found to be counterfeit.
Mr Walley Rashid, 33, appeared before Wigan Magistrates Court last week (25th July) and admitted intending to sell illegal tobacco. As a result he was fined a total of £1474.00.
Councillor Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for communities at Wigan Council, said:
"We've seen a lot of illegal cigarette selling cases brought to court recently, highlighting the good work of our trading standards officers. This should serve as a warning to those committing the same crime.
“This particular raid followed numerous tip offs from the public. Anyone who knows of a similar issue can contact our trading standards team in confidence on 0845 4040506 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. They can also ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
