Young people kick-start media careers
Thursday 18th July, 2013

An event which gave young people across Wigan Borough the chance to kick-start their media career has taken place.

Channel 4 hosted a “4Talent” event at the Wigan Youth Zone on Wednesday 17 July. It was organised with the support of Wigan Council and they were on the look-out for young people with a passion and talent for the media.

The day included three creative workshops which gave budding media professionals a chance to boost their acting, presenting and journalism skills and learn more about social networking, gaming, advertising and directing.

One of those who attended the day was Adam Cusick from Wigan. He said: “I went to the event to see what job opportunities are out there for the future. During the day I attended the journalism and TV course, which was eye-opening and it has really made me think about what career path I want to take when I’m older.

“I really enjoyed the experience and think it’s fantastic that Wigan Council support events like this for young people.”

Channel 4 and leaders from local creative industries were on hand to provide expert advice on the skills, experience and attitude needed to get noticed in the industry, and also revealed secrets on how to build a career in media.

Longer term work experience opportunities with Channel 4 were on offer to all attendees, along with further information about their apprenticeships, internships and production traineeships. There were also details about any local opportunities available in the industry.

Councillor Chris Ready, Wigan Council Cabinet member for Communications, said: “Wigan Council works with organisations such as Channel 4 so young people across the borough have the opportunity to work in their dream jobs. The “4Talent” event was brilliant and it’s great those who attended are now a step closer in achieving their goal of having a career in the media industry.”

The Wigan Youth Zone provides young people from the local community with job and career opportunities. For more information, visit www.wiganyz.org.
