|Woman escapes unhurt following arson attack
A woman was lucky to escape unharmed after her house was targeted by an arsonist.
At about 1.15am on 24 June 2013, a 45-year-old woman was woken by the smoke alarm at her home on Fairhurst Avenue, Wigan.
She went to investigate and found slight damage to her front door.
Officers have established that a jar filled with unknown accelerants had been placed next to her front door with a rag placed inside. The rag was lit and the fire extinguished itself after causing some damage to the door.
Police Contable Graeme Pendlebury, from the Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Because the victim had working smoke alarms she was alerted to the fire that was deliberately started outside her front door.
“Thankfully it didn’t fully take hold and appears to have extinguished itself.
“While she escaped unharmed and the damage was relatively minor, obviously the potential outcome could have been one of death and destruction.
“If anyone has any information about the person responsible or why the victim’s house was targeted I would urge them to call me in absolute confidence.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7124, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
