Graduate trainees have role to play in councilís future
Monday 8th July, 2013

Talented graduates with a passion for local government are being sought for new roles with Wigan Council. As the council continues to become more robust and prepared for the challenges of the future, the posts will provide opportunities to complement and strengthen the organisationís team of skilled staff.

The successful applicants will support Wigan Councilís commitment to continuous improvement through research, data analysis and project management.

The investment in recent graduates follows the ongoing success of the councilís apprenticeship programme which has benefitted 31 young people since it started in October 2012, with eight going on to further employment with the organisation.

Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Peter Smith, said: ďRecruiting graduates is a real investment in the future of the council, and the borough. We want to ensure we are in the best position we can be to meet the needs of our residents. Research into the changing nature of the borough and identifying strengths and future challenges, is crucial to informing our planning. These graduates will play a key role in gathering and analysing this information.

ďItís important to invest in people starting out in their careers and this is also cost-effective in the longer term. Wigan falls below the national average for the percentage of people qualified to NVQ level 4 and above so we need to contribute to ensuring we keep bright, talented and enthusiastic people here in Wigan. We encourage other businesses to do this and Iím sure that this will be the start of a successful graduate recruitment programme for Wigan Council.Ē

The three graduate trainees will be employed on a three-year, fixed-term contract. The new posts are open to graduates of any age, who have completed degree or NVQ 4 level qualifications this year.
