|Big Gig set to hit the right note with jazz fans
MESNES Park celebrates The Wigan International Jazz Festival next weekend as part of a music extravaganza.
The Big Gig, taking place on Sunday 14 July from 12 noon-4pm, offers an afternoon of live entertainment which will include Bolton-based Jeriatric Jazz. Other music acts performing on the day are Anvil St. Drummers, Secret People, Wigan Ukulele Band and Wigan Community Theatre.
Visitors are invited to come along, enjoy the music, try one of Fredrick’s delicious ice creams in the new café at the Pavilion, and explore the park as it is brought back to live through the £1.6 million restoration project.
Ian Darrington, Director of Wigan International Jazz Festival, said: “The excitement is really building for the start of the jazz festival next week. The Big Gig offers a free family-friendly event for not just jazz fans but all music lovers alike, and I’d encourage people to take a trip to the park to enjoy the entertainment.”
Wigan International Jazz Festival, sponsored by Manchester Airport, takes place between Thursday 11 July - Sunday 14 July and includes artists from as far afield as Russia and Holland, with the Igor Butman Big Band and the Dutch Swing College Band rolling into town.
Other star acts include David Lyttle and Interlude, performing with Jason Rebello; Nearly Dan, who will be taking to the stage to pay homage to Steely Dan; and homegrown talent, vocalist Georgina Jackson.
Any budding musicians can also take advantage of improvisation and vocal workshops with Linley Hamilton & His Trio, members of Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra and Dana Masters.
