|Get into the groove at town centre jazz event
Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra at last year's festival
THE sound of jazz will fill the air in Wigan town centre at a free event taking place as part of Wigan International Jazz Festival.
Shoppers will be treated to performances from Wigan Schools Swing Band and Wigan Youth Big Band, directed by Andy Morel, in the Market Place on Saturday 13 July at 11am.
Festival Director Ian Darrington said: “This year’s jazz festival offers music lovers four days of performances by jazz acts from around the globe, with the majority of these taking place at Robin Park Indoor Sports Centre.
“The town centre event allows us to bring the beat out onto the streets of Wigan so that everyone gets the chance to enjoy the entertainment – and it won’t cost a penny!”
The festival, sponsored by Manchester Airport, takes place between Thursday 11 July - Sunday 14 July and includes artists from as far afield as Russia and Holland, with the Igor Butman Big Band and the Dutch Swing College Band rolling into town.
Other star acts include David Lyttle and Interlude, performing with Jason Rebello; Nearly Dan, who will be taking to the stage to pay homage to Steely Dan; and homegrown talent, vocalist Georgina Jackson.
Any budding musicians can also take advantage of improvisation and vocal workshops with Linley Hamilton & His Trio, members of Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra and Dana Masters.
The full list of entertainment during the festival can be found at www.wlct.org
