|Town comes together to celebrate Wiganís Wembley wonders
A homecoming to mark Wigan Athleticís historic FA Cup victory will be one of the biggest parties the town has ever seen.
Thatís according to Wigan Council who are encouraging fans to celebrate with the players in the town centre this Monday (May 20th). Festivities will start at 4 pm in Market Place. At around 5:15 pm the team will arrive on Standishgate on an open top bus. After a short journey on the bus along Standishgate, at approximately 5:30 pm the players will take to the stage to lift the cup in front of the fans. The event will last until 6 pm.
Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, says: ďItís going to be a wonderful occasion. It has been an extraordinary season for Wigan Athletic and this will be an opportunity for the club to say thank you to the fans for their support through the good times and the bad.
ďRelegation from the Premier League canít diminish the pride the whole town feels. To win the oldest cup competition in football, and in such style, was a remarkable achievement. The town will come together on Monday and put on a party we will remember for years to come.Ē
A stage will be set up in Market Place with a series of special guests greeting the crowds until the players arrive at 5:30 pm. They will then address the fans and show off the FA Cup.
To help those driving to the event, the council is waiving fees on its pay and display car parks in Wigan town centre from 3 pm. It means after that time, parking will be free on seven car parks close to the event.
Arrangements for the homecoming mean there will be a number of road closures around Wigan town centre throughout Monday.
