Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust joins national programme to improve health services for gay people
Friday 10th May, 2013

Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust (Bridgewater) has joined Stonewall’s Health Champions programme, receiving free advice and expertise on health services from the gay equality charity.

The programme, funded by the Department of Health, supports 20 health organisations across Britain to improve health services for lesbian, gay and bisexual people

Stonewall research shows that gay people have a range of specific health concerns which often go unmet. Health services often overlook these needs and focus on sexual health. Bridgewater joins 19 other health service organisations working with Stonewall.

Bridgewater is responsible for providing NHS community health services in Wigan, Leigh, Halton, St Helens and Warrington and also delivers community dental services in the above areas plus Trafford, Bolton, Stockport, Tameside and Glossop and Western Cheshire.

“By being a Health Champion we’re sending out a powerful message to our local community,” says Dr Kate Fallon, Chief Executive of Bridgewater. “We’re proud to be part of the programme and look forward to developing our work around sexual orientation with Stonewall.”

James Taylor, Stonewall Senior Health Officer said: “By being part of the Health Champions programme Bridgewater will receive free support from Stonewall to achieve real improvements in the care provided to lesbian, gay and bisexual people and their families.”
