Widow of murdered naval officer to be given the Elizabeth Cross
Thursday 25th April, 2013

The family of a naval officer from Standish will be presented with a medal in his honour at a special ceremony at Wigan town hall on Friday (April 26).

Lieutenant Commander Ian Molyneux was shot dead on board HMS Astute when it was docked in Southampton in April 2011. His widow, Gillian, will be awarded the Elizabeth Cross by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Warren Smith. The medal is given to the next-of-kin of members of the British Forces killed while on duty since the end of the Second World War.

The ceremony will be hosted by the Mayor of Wigan Borough Cllr Myra Whiteside. Also present will be the Northern England Naval Regional Commander Commodore Dickie Baum.

Lt Cdr Molyneux, a father-of-four and an active figure in the borough’s amateur rugby league scene, was shot dead by Able Seaman Ryan Donovan, who was jailed for life following the attack. Lt Cdr Molyneux’s four children will attend the ceremony along with other members of his family and friends.

Cllr Myra Whiteside said: “Lt Cdr Molyneux’s tragic death deeply shocked and saddened the people of Wigan Borough. He was clearly an outstanding naval officer and a loving and committed husband and father.

“His widow and children have shown remarkable dignity in the face of their terrible loss. It will be an absolute privilege for me to welcome them to the town hall and host this ceremony on behalf of the borough. I can think of no one who deserves such recognition more.”
