Celebrate Greenheart’s Jubilee Way
Tuesday 9th April, 2013

After a long cold winter, now is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy some of the finest countryside Wigan’s Greenheart has to offer with a day of guided walks, cycle rides and jogging sessions, followed by an afternoon reception, charity raffle, marketplace and more at Haigh Hall on Sunday 14th April.

Challenge yourself by completing the Jubilee Way which stretches from Pennington Flash in the south of the borough at Leigh, to Haigh Hall in the north of Greenheart. Or, there are five new shorter circular Jubilee Legacy walks to enjoy. Why not get some fresh air whilst taking in the stunning views and plentiful wildlife?

Wigan Council Cabinet champion for the environment and Greenheart Board member, Cllr Kevin Anderson, said: “The Greenheart Partnership has designated more than 35 kilometres as off-road recreational routes as part of last year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. What was previously a muddy and sometimes impassable track has been transformed into a high quality route for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians.”

Much of the upgraded route is along the Leigh branch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the upgraded towpath, including an impressive viewing platform and benches - installed to provide a welcome rest for users of the route.

Cllr Anderson added: “What better way is there to see wildlife, enjoy open space and improve health and fitness.’’

Guided activities run at various times from a range of locations, starting at 9.30am. Activities at Haigh Hall run between 2pm and 4pm. To view the routes in full, or for more details on activities, go to www.visitgreenheart.com or www.getactivewiganandleigh.co.uk
