NHS staff from Wigan recognised for commitment to care at Trust awards
Friday 22nd March, 2013

Two NHS staff who delivered excellent care to patients in Wigan have been recognised at the first annual staff awards hosted by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust (Bridgewater).

Julie Atherton was awarded the Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Contribution. Julie was, until recently, the Macmillan Cancer Lead for Nursing and Therapy Services in Wigan.

She was chosen by Chairman Harry Holden in recognition of many years of commitment to patient care, especially those complex cancer care and palliative care patients for whom she has worked tirelessly.

Dental receptionist Ellen Woodcock who is based at Pemberton Health Centre in Wigan was named Bridgewater Non-Clinical Employee of the Year. Ellen works within Bridgewater’s Community Dental service which provides specialist treatment to children, adults and vulnerable people.

Ellen was singled out from tough competition for the Bridgewater award for displaying empathy to patients and supporting patients with learning difficulties. She has also contributed to the efficiency of the team by introducing new systems and supporting patient involvement in the service.

Chairman Harry Holden said: “Julie has been an inspiration to her colleagues and her patients. She has had a long career in the NHS and has shown exemplary leadership in the development of cancer and palliative care services for the people of Wigan. I know there are many people who will agree that this award is well deserved.”

Chief Executive of Bridgewater Dr Kate Fallon said: “I am particularly pleased that we have been able to recognise Ellen’s contribution through this award. She is an example of how our front of house staff can make such a difference to patients through good communication, empathy and introducing more effective ways of working. She is a valuable member of our dental team.”

Bridgewater provides NHS community services in the boroughs of Warrington, Wigan, Halton, St Helens and Trafford. Its services include district nursing, community children’s services, podiatry, health visiting and physiotherapy.

In addition to this Bridgewater provides specialist community dental services in these areas plus Bolton, Stockport, Trafford, Tameside, Glossop and Western Cheshire.

Bridgewater is encouraging more people to have their say on local health services. Find out more about membership at www.bridgewater.nhs.uk.
