Hail to the ale...
Praise for the pie...
And of course, thanks for the food!

Wigan's mouth-watering and thirst quenching 10 day celebration that is the Wigan Food and Drink Festival gets underway on Thursday 28 February with the 26th CAMRA Beer Festival.

This year's festival is a homage to the food that's put Wigan on the map over the years - the humble pie!

Coinciding with National Pie Week (4th to 10th March) there's a host of pie themed events including "Pie Dinner" with acclaimed TV chef Simon Rimmer at Haigh Hall, the multi-award winning Crown at Worthington will host a gourmet Food and Beer Matching Evening and 2012 North West School Chef of the Year Mark Holmes will be hosting "Quiche Me Quick" - preparing quick and healthy quiches and open pies - as part of the Outdoor Kitchen Theatre.

Nigel Howarth, one of Lancashire and the UK's finest chefs will show onlookers at the Outdoor Kitchen Theatre on Thursday 7 March how to prepare a special Lancashire Dinner menu.

The programme is packed with sores of special themed events at restaurants, free community events and the hugely popular Continental Market runs in Wigan town centre from Wednesday 6 March to Saturday 9 March.

Once again the Lancashire Hotpots will bring the curtain down with a free town centre gig at 1.30pm on Saturday 9 March.

Organiser Keith Bergman from leisure provider WLCT, said: "The Wigan Food and Drink Festival was set up to show there's more to this town than the pastry filled snack. But we felt it was time to recognise a food which has become synonymous with Wigan over the years. The festival programme is much more than a pie festival and it still showcases the wonderful range of quality restaurants, producers and chefs that exists within Wigan."

The Wigan Food and Drink Festival's bacon was saved in December when new sponsors stepped in to save the event.

This year's Principal Sponsor is Wigan based Euromark. Managing Director, Shaun Luck, said: "At Euromark, we are very excited to be part of this year's Festival and as the main sponsor it gave us the opportunity to support local businesses and shine a spotlight on what's good about Wigan's food and drink industry, we're exceptionally honoured to be involved."

Wigan Food and Drink Festival would not be possible without the support of local businesses and organisations including Euromark, Poole's Pies, Patak's, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Wigan Council, Metrofresh, Rigalettos Italian Restaurant, Ellsey's and Co, Grand Arcade, Fiswal, Lancashire Publications and Standish Media Services.
