Death of serving councillor: Tributes paid to Barbara Bourne
Wednesday 30th January, 2013

Tributes have been paid to Councillor Barbara Bourne who has died following a long illness.

Councillor Bourne, who passed away on Monday 28th of January, had represented the Pemberton ward on Wigan Council since 1996. She lived in Marsh Green and worked tirelessly on behalf of the area’s residents. One of her main achievements was the successful campaign to set-up a medical clinic in Marsh Green. It opened in 2010.

Councillor Paul Prescott, a fellow Pemberton ward councillor, paid tribute to his late colleague. He said: “I was very saddened to hear of Barbara’s death. She had an indomitable spirit and was a very determined lady who worked exceptionally hard for the people of Marsh Green.

“She played a key part in setting up the Marsh Green clinic. The area had no medical centre for years so people had to travel out of the ward to get treatment. She spent a lot of time lobbying for the centre to be built and was delighted when it opened.”

The councillor’s funeral will take place at one pm on Wednesday 6th of February at St. Barnabas Church in Marsh Green. Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Councillor said: “My thoughts are with Councillor Bourne’s family and friends at this very sad time.

“She was a conscientious and energetic ward councillor who served the public with passion and enthusiasm for many years. Barbara was highly thought of in Marsh Green and the surrounding areas and I know residents there will feel her loss. She made a notable contribution to the community and to civic life in Wigan Borough. She will be much missed by many people.”
