|New Year, New Job for Makerfield MP
Ed Miliband has today promoted Makerfield MP, Yvonne Fovargue in a mini-reshuffle of the shadow frontbench.
Yvonne Fovargue MP joined the Shadow Front Bench in October 2011 as a member of the Opposition Whips and following today’s announcement by the Labour Leader, she will join the Transport Team as Shadow Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport.
She accepted the offer after speaking to Ed Miliband on the telephone earlier this week.
Her portfolio will include;
- Light Rail and Trams
- Traffic Management
- Regional & Local Transport (inc roads, maintenance, Major Projects, Winter Resilience)
- Natural Environment – including biofuels
- Sustainable travel – Walking and Cycling
- Accessibility & Equalities
- Alternatives to travel
- SMEs and growth
The promotion follows a whirlwind start to her parliamentary career. Fovargue (aged 56) once described herself as the ‘accidental MP’ after a long and successful career in the Voluntary Sector as Chief Executive of St Helens CAB. Within 18 months of her election she was a member of the shadow front bench team in a successful stint in the Whips Office before the latest promotion to the Transport Team.
Yvonne Fovargue MP said:
“Anybody who lives and works in our Borough will know that making the right decisions on transport is a key issue not just in helping people get out and about, but also in promoting economic competitiveness. This holds true in towns and cities across the nation.
“My priority is and will always remain to put Makerfield first and I will give my all in the fight to secure prosperity for our area in Parliament. We are still in a very difficult economic climate with many in our community suffering as a result of this Tory Government’s failed policies and my focus on these issues will continue.”
Fovargue will be working with Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Maria Eagle MP and the shadow transport team of Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Lilian Greenwood MP and Pat Glass MP.
