Founded in Wigan nearly two centuries ago, they’re the oldest pie and pastry brand in the country and their reputation as upper crust producers of pies, puddings and pastries is second to none.
And from this year, school pupils across the borough will be able to tuck into their favourite pie from Poole’s bakery following a deal struck with Wigan Council’s award winning catering and facilities provider, MetroFresh.
Debbie Clarke, Service Manager at MetroFresh says:
"Poole’s Pies has an outstanding reputation and their products are popular in homes and public venues across the country.
"This collaboration is a fantastic opportunity to educate young people in product development and we are keen for our Executive Chef, Mark Holmes, to work with Poole’s and pupils to devise a healthy, tasty product for our schools.
"Working with local partners also gives us the chance to deliver projects which explore issues such as food provenance, which we have found young people are really interested in."
Cllr David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s Deputy Leader and cabinet member for the economy, adds:
"Wigan’s renowned for its pie-making heritage and Poole’s Pies are top of the league with a pedigree going back to 1847.
Wigan Council is keen to support local business and to find ways of nurturing partnerships which generate entrepreneurial spirit, economic growth and jobs."
Neil Court-Johnston, Chief Executive of Poole’s Pies, says:
"We’re delighted to be involved with MetroFresh and Wigan Council on this project; it has the potential to set new standards in quality and service – home grown in Wigan. I am excited to be working with partners who share our corporate and social awareness and our local connections.
"We take great pride in all of our savoury and sweet products and are proud sponsors of The Wigan Food & Drink festival in 2013 – demonstrating our commitment to food excellence in Wigan Borough".
MetroFresh was recently named Catering Service Team of the Year by the Association of Public Sector Excellence. The award, presented to Service Manager Debbie Clarke at an event in Glasgow, recognised the commitment shown by MetroFresh to service delivery, partnership collaboration and community initiatives.
