Public services over the festive period

Wigan Council offices will be closed during the Christmas holidays with full opening hours resuming on Wednesday 2nd January. Many services will continue unaffected during the festive period.

All libraries will be closed on 25th, 26th and 1st. Leigh Library closes at 3pm on Christmas Eve. It is open Saturday 29th December from 9.30am-4pm and then on Monday 31st 9am-3pm. The library at the Wigan Life Centre closes at 3pm on Christmas Eve. It is open 9-5 on 27th - 29th December and 9am-3.30pm on 31st. Please check the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust website www.wlct.org for details of other local opening times.

Leisure Centres are closed on 25th, 26th and 1st. All will close early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Check the Leisure Trust website for details.

Other services will be available during normal working days in the festive period. These include:

Registrars Offices - Monday 24th December as normal, closed on 25th and 26th December and open 27th, 28th and 31st December. They will open again on Wednesday 2nd January 2013.

Cemeteries across the borough will be open (for visitors only) as normal from 9am to 4pm every day during the Christmas and New Year period. No burials will take place on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

There are changes to the days of refuse and recycling collections over the Christmas period. Residents should refer to their collection calendar for more information or find out dates online at www.wigan.gov.uk/recycling. Residents with collection dates of the Monday and Tuesday before Christmas will have collections earlier than usual, on Saturday 22nd and Monday 24th respectively. Collections due 26th-28th December and 1st-4th January will be one day later than usual.

Residents can put (real) Christmas trees in the green bin or take it to one of the borough’s Household Waste Recycling Centres. All household waste recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Normal opening times will be in place on all other days. Extra bottle and can waste can be also recycled in the ‘bottle bank’ locations at many supermarkets and public houses.
