Haigh Country Park’s first Christmas Market has been hailed a huge success.

More than 200 people flocked to the stables courtyard on Saturday to enjoy various festive stalls including wreath making, wood crafts and chestnuts roasted in a clay oven.

Wigan’s Mayor, Cllr Myra Whiteside was on hand to formally switch on the Christmas lights whilst Parks Activity Officers showed visitors how to make table and tree decorations.

For youngsters there was also a chance to meet Santa in his grotto.

The event was organised by Louisa Bibby from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) and Kath Godfrey from The Conservation Volunteers with support from the newly formed Friends of Haigh Country Park.

Louisa Bibby from WLCT said: “It was a wonderful day and a first for Haigh Country Park. It’s definitely something we’d like to build on in future years because the setting is so perfect.
“The feedback we received was fantastic.”

Chairman of the Friends of Haigh Country Park, John Hulme, said: “It was great to see the place so busy. What a wonderful start to the festive season – people didn’t want to leave because they were having such a good time.”
