Christmas has come early for shoppers visiting Leigh and Wigan.
Most car parks will be free from 3pm on the late night shopping Thursdays from when the Christmas lights are switched on. Wigan’s multi-storey car parks will also be open later and all pay-and-display car parks will be free on Sundays.
“I want to make visiting town easier and more attractive,” says deputy council leader Cllr David Molyneux. “Both Leigh and Wigan are offering great retail and leisure opportunities and so with more free parking, it’s definitely time to really go to town for Christmas.”

Spinning Gate shopping centre late night shopping this year starts on 6th December for three weeks and also on Friday 21st December.
All town centre car parks will be open and available through the night for those wishing to stay out.
Additionally, the council is offering free parking on Sundays, all day, at all the pay and display car parks in Leigh town centre. Please note however that the new town hall car park will be closed on 22nd November to prepare for the switch on event.
There are six late night shopping Thursdays in Wigan up to Christmas, starting this Thursday 15th November with the Christmas lights switch on.
With the exception of Civic Centre, there will be free parking after 3pm on all surface pay and display car parks, The Galleries and Water Street multi storey car parks. To enable shoppers and visitors to the town centre to make the most of this offer, the multi storey car parks will remain open until 9pm on these late shopping nights. Also, the surface car parks will remain available through the night for those wishing to stay later in town and take advantage of the pubs and restaurants.
Additionally, the council is offering free parking all days Sundays, at its town centre surface pay and display car parks (except Civic Centre). These are: Mona Street, Harrogate Street and Chapel Lane, all of which are tarmac surfaced with marked bays and provided with street lighting.
Further 'Christmas free parking presents' for residents and visitors to the town centre will be announced in the next couple of weeks.
