Meet the Mayor
Tuesday 16th October, 2012

Meet the Mayor
Cllr Myra Whiteside with Mayor Hannah Roberts

Wigan Borough has a new Mayor. It’s Hannah Roberts from Ince.

But the official first Citizen needn’t worry, as Hannah is only Mayor for the Day and Cllr Myra Whiteside will be back on duty in her own right tomorrow.

Hannah, who is in year 11 at Rose Bridge High School, was one of scores of applicants for the role as part of Wigan Council’s commitment to Local Democracy Week. School pupils from across the borough were invited to say what they feel about voting and the democratic process. Last week, the Mayor and a panel of judges selected Hannah’s entry.

Pupils were asked why they thought it was important for young people to be able to have their say about things in Wigan Borough. Hannah’s response was:
“We want things to be changed for when we are adults for our children. We want things, like places to go and things to do. We have opinions because we have grown up in Wigan. Also we want a safe place to grow up in.”

“Your entry really stood out for me,” Cllr Whiteside told Hannah. “I was very impressed with how you approached the important subject of how the public and politicians engage.”

The two Mayors took part in a number of activities today (Tuesday) including a Mayoral visit to a school in Leigh. Hannah received a VIP tour of the town hall and got a chance to see democracy in action by watching the planning committee’s meeting in the council chamber. Hannah also became the Mayor proper by donning the official (and rather heavy) robes of office.

The Mayor for the Day event is one of the council’s activities this week to promote participation in the electoral process. There’s also a chance to speak to the leader of the council, Lord Smith, on Thursday from 4.30pm if you book a place at the ‘Leader Listens’ event by calling 01942 827282.
