|Eyesore No More
One of Wigan Borough’s most infamous eyesores is to be demolished in the next few weeks.
Borsdane Precinct – the Hindley shopping centre whose architectural style belongs to a different time – is to be cleared later this month ahead of a major redevelopment of the site.
Council property and legal officers have worked closely with Clowes Developments after earlier proposals fell foul of the economic downturn.
And now work is starting on a brand new retail scheme which will see five shops, anchored by a Spar convenience store, replace the familiar concrete facades at Borsdane. Other premises to be built include a bookmakers with further traders to be signed shortly. The existing Spar will stay open until the rest of the site has been finished, which will provide continuity for locals. It will be demolished with plans for a number of new homes to be built on the site.
Deputy council leader and champion for the economy Cllr David Molyneux says: “This is excellent news for the people of Hindley and for the local economy. I am delighted that council officers and our partners at Clowes Development have made such excellent progress and we can look forward to this major investment in the area.”
Ian Dickinson, Finance Director at Clowes Developments also warmly welcomed the partnership. He says: “Clowes Developments are pleased to be working in conjunction with Wigan Council to re-develop and regenerate the former Borsdane Precinct.”
The main demolition work is scheduled by the end of October with construction work planned through to the middle of 2013.
