Julia Donaldson performing The Gruffalo
Children’s author Julia Donaldson thrilled youngsters at Wigan Library this week by acting out her book “The Gruffalo”.
Julia, the current Waterstones Children’s Laureate, spoke to children from Marsh Green Primary School and St John’s Primary, Hindley on Tuesday (25 September) before performing two of her books - “The Gruffalo” and “What the Ladybird Heard”.
The Gruffalo tells the story of a mouse's walk in the woods and the cunning way he avoids being eaten by a fox, owl and snake by pretending he’s on his way to meet his friend the Gruffalo – the most fearsome creature in the forest.
The book has sold more than four million copies worldwide, has won several prizes for children's literature, and has been developed into plays on both the West End and Broadway.
Rob Sanderson from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT), who manage Wigan Library on behalf of the Council, said: “It was quite a coup for us. She’s an amazing storyteller and transported everyone to the world of the Gruffalo.
“The children attending said it was something they would remember for a very long time.”
