|Have Your Say on Council Tax Support
Wigan Council is asking residents to have their say about its plans for a new Local Council Tax Support Scheme.
From April 2013 the Government is abolishing the national Council Tax Benefit scheme and giving the council 10-15% less money to spend on helping low income households to pay their Council Tax.
Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Smith, said: “The shortfall in funding that the government provides to the council will be between £2.8 million and £5.6 million. To avoid cutting services we need to make some tough decisions on who will get Council Tax support next year.”
The announcement was made at a meeting of the Full Council last week.
Cllr Smith added: “Inevitably this means many households will get less support and be expected to contribute more towards their Council Tax. For some households this will mean paying some Council Tax when under the current scheme they didn’t have to pay any”.
The council wants local residents to have a voice in how it provides support for people on low incomes to pay their Council Tax. A six week public consultation exercise starts on 18 September 2012 and residents are being encouraged to fill in an online survey to give their views on the proposals. The feedback from the survey will be used to help shape the new scheme ready for April 2013.
