Man given football banning order - Wigan
Friday 14th September, 2012

A man who tried to incite violence during a football match has been banned from stadiums for three years.

On Friday 14 September 2012, at Wigan Magistrates' Court, Daniel Lannon (24/07/1992), from the Pemberton area of Wigan, was given a three year football banning order.

Evidence compiled by Greater Manchester Police showed Lannon to be involved in a catalogue of incidents at Wigan Athletic fixtures, both home and away, culminating in the last home game of the 2011/12 season.

During Wigan's match with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Lannon was filmed invading the pitch before attempting to incite the away Wolves fans to engage in disorder.

At the time of the incident he was banned from the stadium by the club.

Police Constable Ashley Keyte, from GMP's Specialist Operations Branch, said: "Football related violence has no part in modern society yet some mindless individuals still think it acceptable to brawl with others for no other reason than their allegiance to another team.

"We work hard to prevent incidents of football related disorder but when they happen we will endeavour to identify offenders and bring them to justice.

"We will also work with the football clubs across Greater Manchester to ensure that those who are convicted, or who we can prove to be a threat to public safety, are banned not only from the ground of the team they support, but every single stadium in the UK."

A spokesman for Wigan Athletic said: "We work very closely with GMP to eradicate this type of behaviour from our ground and we welcome any attempts to ensure the DW Stadium remains a passionate family friendly environment."
