Two critical following arson in Wigan
Monday 10th September, 2012

An investigation has been launched after a flat in Wigan was deliberately set alight, critically injuring two people.

Shortly after 9pm on Sunday 9 September 2012, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service called police to the flat on Redbrook Road, Ince, following reports of a fire.

A 24-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man are in hospital for treatment to serious burns. The woman is described as being critical, while the man is in a critical but stable condition.

The flat has been extensively damaged and a scene is still in place. Residents from the other seven flats in the block are still unable to return home.

Two people are now in police custody. A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing arson with intent to endanger life and a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing arson with intent to endanger life and causing grievous bodily harm.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington said: "We are continuing to keep an open mind as we investigate the events of last night as to how they occurred although clearly it is suspicious.
"We are working closely with the fire service not only in relation to the investigation, but also in relation to the impact this incident has had on other residents.

"We would ask that any witnesses, or anyone with any information, calls police as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7149 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
