|Join In the Olympic spirit!
Have you been inspired by the Olympics?
If so then there’s plenty happening this weekend to get your sporting teeth into.
More than 5,000 events will take place across the UK this weekend to help build on the sporting and volunteering legacy from London 2012.
It’s all part of the “Join In” campaign - a nationwide grassroots campaign to capture the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of hosting the Olympic Games in the UK.
In Wigan, Chorley British Sub Aqua Club will be holding a Try Dive event at the Wigan Life Centre on Saturday at 2.45pm. The day has been made possible following funding from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) and Wigan Council’s Cultural Olympiad Grant. It’s free and suitable for all ages, although children will need parental consent.
Wigan “Back to Badminton Club” are hosting free badminton sessions at Abraham Guest High School, Lamberhead Green on Saturday and Leigh Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday. Both events take place between 12pm and 2pm.
Lizzie Gough from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit said: “The Join In weekend is a great opportunity for people to grasp the nettle and give sports a go. The Olympics has been an inspiration to so many people and we hope that more people now take up sports as a result.”
The Join In weekend takes place Saturday 18 August and Sunday 19 August and highlights include:
- Learn to cycle like Jason Kenny or Bradley Wiggins at the Bolton Clarion Cycling Club, the Furness Future Flyers or the Chester Go Ride Cycling Club.
- Play hockey like Nicola White or Kate Walsh at the Wilmslow Hockey Club or Kirkby Stephen Hockey Club
- Row like Matt Langridge and Richard Egington at Warrington Rowing Club or Mersey Rowing Club.
- Learn Gymnastic moves like Beth Tweddle at the Jump UK Trampoline and Gymnastics Club in Preston or Gym Mania Gymnastics in Fleetwood
Join In events will be taking place in villages, towns and cities across the North West. Visit www.joininuk.org for more information.
