Wigan Borough Sports Awards 2012
Monday 23rd July, 2012

Coaches, teams and sports clubs across the borough are being urged to send in their nominations for the 12th Annual Wigan Borough Sports Awards.

Organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's (WLCT) Sports Development Unit, the formal evening planned at the DW Stadium on Friday 12 October is a celebration of the borough's unsung sporting heroes.

This year residents can nominate members of the sporting community for their outstanding contribution to sport in seven categories:

* Club of the year
* Coach of the year
* Volunteer of the year
* Sports Achiever of the year
* Disabled sports achiever of the year
* Unsung hero in sport
* Team of the year

This year's awards will be presented by Wigan's own Jenny Meadows. Jenny who has won medals at World, European and National Championship in the 800 metres was also named Sports Achiever of the Year at the Awards Ceremony back in 2009.

She said: "I would not be where I am today without the fantastic support of my club, coaches, volunteers and the other amazing people who work tirelessly behind the scenes of voluntary sport. I would encourage everyone to nominate their coach, grounds person, a fellow athlete or the team they play in to be recognised at this awards ceremony."

"I am proud to be speaking at this year's Wigan Borough Sports Awards as the event is a great way to recognise the hard work and dedication of those clubs and individuals involved in sport and to also celebrate the success of Wigan's sports achievers."

Organiser Lizzie Hendley, from WLCT, said: "These awards demonstrate the strength and quality of our sporting community. It provides a unique opportunity to showcase the borough's talent."

Each nominee will receive a complimentary ticket to the awards evening as well as being presented with a certificate at the ceremony.

Winners then go forward to represent Wigan at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards in November.
