Two arrested following death of Francis Farrell
Tuesday 10th July, 2012

Two men have been arrested in relation to the death of a Wigan man.

Francis Farrell, aged 56, was found with a head injury at around 4.10am on Sunday 17 June 2012, on Frog Lane, Wigan.

Francis was taken to hospital for treatment, where he died on Wednesday 20 June 2012.

A post-mortem examination concluded that the cause of Francis' death was a head injury.

Today, Tuesday 10 July 2012, two men aged 22 and 23 were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Rawlinson said; "Francis was a 56 year-old man, who was attacked on Sunday 17 June, Fathers Day, while minding his own business on his way home after enjoying an evening out in Wigan town centre

"Whoever is responsible left him injured, unconscious and lying half in the road on Frog Lane.

"I do not want the public to jump to conclusions now that two men are in custody. Despite this development I still want to hear from members of the public and those who have information that will be vital to this investigation.

"I want to hear from anyone who may think they know who is responsible for this murder and I would like to reassure them that they can speak to me in the strictest of confidence.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who was in a vehicle or walking along Frog Lane between 4am and 4.15am, Sunday morning 17 June.

"It is very important that you contact the incident room as you may well have seen something crucial to the investigation and may not realise the importance of what you saw."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Incident team on 0161 856 5448 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
