Teenage girl sexually assaulted
Thursday 8th December, 2011

A man sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl.

It happened on Platt Lane in Hindley at about 11am on Thursday 1 December 2011.

The girl was walking up Platt Lane, near to its end, when the man approached her and told her to follow him. Scared of what he might do unless she did, the girl followed him into a field where she was sexually assaulted over her clothes for several minutes.

The man then left and the girl went home and reported what had happened to her.

The man is described as white, in his late 20s to early 30sn about 6ft tall, of a thin build and with short black hair. He was wearing a white coat that was zipped up, dark blue baggy jeans and black gloves.

Detective Constable Andrew Partington, from Wigan CID, said: "I can understand the concerns of young people, and particularly their parents, when they see this appeal in the media.

"What I want to stress is that we have had no further reports of this type of incident and nothing to suggest there is a prolific offender in the community - however it is absolutely right we should warn people until this man is caught.

"I firstly want to appeal to anyone who may recognise the man from the above description, or perhaps saw this man hanging around the Platt Lane area, to come forward. Or, if you think you spot someone with this description then please do not hesitate to call us.

"Secondly, it is important that while I do not want parents to overreact, I would advise they take reasonable precautions - especially since the evening is drawing in ever earlier. Please ask your children to stick together in groups, avoid short cuts and poorly lit areas."
